SUMMARY: Karl and Susan have been involved in a car accident, and while Karl has managed to escape with minor injuries, Susan hasn’t come out so lucky. She is suffering from a severe head injury in particular and is currently on life support in ICU.
PAIRING/CHARACTERS: Karl/Susan
YEAR: 2008
SPOILERS: No
NOTES: Karl is feeling somewhat guilty that he has come out of it relatively unscathed, while he sits watching his wife clinging onto life.
Beep…beep…beep…
He sits there by her beside, a sombre look upon his face. With only the sound of the various machines beeping to interfere with what is becoming unbearable silence.
It is now nearing ten hours since the crash. Ten hours, Karl thought, since that b****y joy rider took away his wife’s livelihood. Although to him it felt like twenty-four.
He couldn’t understand how one person could go out and do something as senseless as that lad did and cause so much hurt and pain to someone so innocently dragged into such an act of insanity.
Anyway, he wasn’t important anymore. Not at this moment in time anyway. The most important thing right now is to see that his wife pulls though. She meant everything to him, and he’s not ready to let her go. Especially not to someone else’s act of stupidity, no way.
~
He wakes up almost an hour later to find he’s dosed off, realising that since he’s nodded off Susan’s condition has worsened.
Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep…
Oh god. How could he fall asleep at a time like this. He hadn’t realised. It was so sudden. Had he noticed? Had he noticed and simply not registered due to lack of consciousness or awareness? It was too much to bare thinking about. All he knew is that he had actually do something about it, and quick!
She is quickly deteriorating and so he springs into action.
“Hello? We need some help in here, quick!” he shouts out the door.
Almost immediately a bunch of medical staff arrive at his assistance and get straight to work.
“Okay, she’s arresting. Get the crash cart in here now.”
The doctor lifts the defibrillator of the trolley and charges the paddles.
“Charging to 150…and clear…”
“Charging 200… and, clear…”
No. No, no, “NO!” he screams out.
~
“No, no. You can’t… NO!”
Karl wakes up, panting for breath.
“Oh thank god… It was just a dream, it was just a…dream.” He begins to mutter, but lingers off as he sees her pulse dropping rapidly. For real this time.
“Oh my…” He runs to the door and flings it open wide. “Help! We need some help in here, please!”
This isn’t happening. It can’t be happening. He voices to himself.
Near-by medical staff rush to the scene.
“Okay can we get a crash cart in here, quick.”
A nurse arrives with the crash trolley and begins immediately to charge the paddles.
“Karl, you need to get out of here now.”
“Alright, charging to 150…”
“And clear…”
… “Karl!”
He leaves the room and looks through the glass instead.
“Okay, no response. Charging to 200…”
“And, clear…”
…
“Oh god… Come on Susan, I can’t lose you now. I can’t, not now!” Karl utters in sheer desperation.
The doctor’s expression drops.
“Okay everybody she flat-lined…”
“Charging 250..”
“And clear…”
…
“Charging 300..”
“And clear…”
She sighs heavily.
“Charging 350..”
“Demi…”
“No Laura. I’m not giving up on her yet.”
“Charging, 350….”
“And, clear..”
…
“Come on!” Karl rides, now practically in tears.
The two-woman exchange glances. The more determined over-riding.
“Charging 400…”
“And clear…”
Beep, beep, beep…
‘All right guys, we have a heartbeat.”
Karl lets out a huge sigh of relief.
The other medicals begin to tidy away the equipment as Dr Vinton keep her eye on the monitor for a moment.
“Okay,” she responds finally, “good job guys.”
She makes her way out to where Karl is looking on and places a comforting hand on his shoulder.
“She’ll be alright now Karl. She’s a real fighter.” She assures him the best she can.
“Yeah… Thanks, for everything.” He smiles weakly.
“No problem.” She smiles, with a twinkle in her eye.
Dr Demi Vinton and himself had grown close over resent times. And he was grateful to her for many things over the years. But this, this help he’ll never forget!
As he re-enters the room, he feels a little piece of his heart click back into place. A piece he thought he’d lost forever. A piece so small, yet so significant.
He sighs as he takes a seat back in the chair by her bed.
“I really thought I’d lost you that time. Don’t you ever do that again. You hear me? You had me at my wits end…and I don’t know what I’d have done if I’d lost you…”
He stumbles on the last few words as tears begin to stream from his eyes.
“I love you Susan, and I never want to lose you. Ever!”
THE END
