Right here is a selection of photos from my 3 and a bit weeks away.
Jerusalem just before sunrise
The sun just rising - the dome was part of our accomodation (convent-cum-hostel)
The sun almost risen
The Wailing Wall (Western Wall) showing the separate ares for men and women. I was lucky enough to be able to go and pray there a couple of times as well as walk through the complex several times as we were staying just a 5 minute walk from there. To actually touch the wall is something very special as well as being almost surreal.
The Dome of the Rock - I had my back to the El Aqsa mosque at this point which is the other mosque up on that complex. Jews are also technically not allowed up there but I decided to ignore that notice!
Just about the whole of the mosque from one angle
Possibly my favourite photo of all the ones I took - you can see the moon above the arches if you look carefully and to me that gives the whole thing that extra dimension and special feeling.
Now to the archaeology! A couple of photos of our square on the first day
An Israeli flag flying at Masada with the Dead Sea in the background. It was about as close to the wilderness out here as you could get!
The remains of the wall from 2 photos ago!
Our first major find! We think all the pieces to this storage vessel are there and it has now gone for restoration. It is around 3000 years old and was found by myself and a friend at the bottom of the wall in the first archaeology pic. We had been using pick axes to demolish the wall up until just a few cms above this level.
The vessel ready to have its official photo
Just next to where the vessel was (you can see it bottom right) was something that looked like the end of a small jug (just where the trowel is being pointed) but it turned out to be something very different. The dig director (left) and our area supervisor (right) are just beginning to realise what it is here
One small jug very quickly became a whole lot more! This is our 'cultic corner' that is once again about 3000 years old. All these would have been used as part of the process of making sacrifices and libations and the pomegranate and phallic shaped objects are fertility symbols. And don't worry the hole in the pomegranate is not from one of our pick axes.
A context shot. You can see where the 'cultic corner' is and where the vessel was, and where the person is sitting in the top right of the picture is how high the wall was 2 weeks earlier!
2 of the more unusual buildings in Tel Aviv.
A series of shots of one of the most stunning sunsets I've ever seen, over the Mediterranean Sea in Tel Aviv
Jonah's whale! This in in the city of Jaffa just up the coast from Tel Aviv where the story began.
Looking out from our area at the dig site to see the sun rise over the valley
Well there's a selection of the best photos! I have loads more (over 400 in total) so if people want to see more photos of pretty much anything let me know.
